The San Angelo City Council approved a resolution on Tuesday allowing the city manager to apply for a grant from the Motor Vehicle Crime Prevention Authority. This funding will support the department’s efforts in combating motor vehicle burglary and theft.
Officials report that the Fiscal Year ’27 Task Force Grant application builds on the initiatives established in Fiscal Year ’26 and expands the program by adding more personnel and vehicles.
The application will continue to fund leases for license plate reader cameras established in 2026, support the initial two investigator positions, and cover necessary travel expenses for program managers to attend conferences.
In the new grant application, a total of three investigator positions (an increase of one) and a new sergeant position are included, bringing the total number of grant-funded personnel to four at the anticipated adjusted pay levels. Additionally, the application includes requests for equipment purchases, specifically three trucks and one drone for the investigators.
The total grant request is $861,000, with 80-percent funded by the grant with the city providing a cash match of $143,000.
