The Concho Valley Homeless Planning Coalition’s monthly meeting took place on Wednesday, Sept. 9 in the Sugg Room of the San Angelo Stephens Central Library. Dozens of community partners, including nonprofit agency representatives and individual volunteers discussed homelessness and brainstormed solutions together.

Topics Included:

Rock Rose Community Campus Updates – the coalition has pivoted in response to loud critical pushback from a small group of community members earlier in the year but remains hopeful that creative and collaborative housing solutions are on the horizon.

Into the Warmth – As inclement weather approaches, the coalition seeks to prepare in advance for harsh conditions by determining potential temporary emergency weather shelter locations, generating volunteer involvement, and securing donations of cold weather goods.

Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week – This annual program takes place on the week leading up to Thanksgiving to draw attention to the realities of food insecurity and homelessness.

Concho Valley Community Action Agency will host multiple community events in acknowledgement of the program, including a homeless vigil, homeless symposium, “Empty Bowls” interactive art experience, and a local food distribution event.

As always, the meeting concluded with each coalition member sharing updates from their organizations and programs and remarking on the trends they have noted in homelessness in the Concho Valley. These observations included notes of a potential increase in housing insecurity in elderly populations, visible homelessness expanding to new neighborhoods of San Angelo, and an increase in food and meal distributions to meet rising needs in the community.
