According to a news release from Coleman County on Thursday afternoon, a jury in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas San Angelo Division reached a verdict in the civil lawsuit stemming from the 2017 death of Derrek Monroe.

According to court documents, Monroe died after a suicide attempt while in custody at the Coleman County Jail, and his family alleged that County policies and jail practices contributed to his death.

After hearing the evidence, the jury found no liability on the part of Coleman County or the Sheriff’s Office.

“Coleman County is grateful for the jury’s careful consideration of the facts in this difficult case. We recognize the profound loss experienced by the Monroe family and again offer our condolences. Nothing about this case has been easy, and we understand the lasting impact on all who were involved. We remain committed to the safety of those in our custody and to the continued improvement of our policies and training for the staff who serve our community every day.”
