Two education related news stories for Concho Valley Residents this week. Angelo State University has announced the appointment of a new dean for its College of Science and Engineering and students in the San Angelo Independent School District have begun their State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness tests.
A news release from ASU reveals that, Dr. Chih-Chien “Linus” Yu, previously a professor of mathematics and the associate vice provost for academic excellence at the Oregon Institute of Technology, has been appointed as the dean for its College of Science and Engineering. He will direct the college’s seven academic departments, which offer more than 30 undergraduate and graduate degrees and certificate programs.
Yu holds a B.S. and M.S. in mathematics from Tamkang University in Taiwan, and a Ph.D. in mathematics from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He spent 16 years at the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith, where he became the associate dean and oversaw various departmental leadership roles, including engineering re-accreditation.
Also, Students in the San Angelo Independent School District began their State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness test this week and will continue until April 30. SAISD stated that the STAAR test, managed by the Texas Education Agency, assesses students’ understanding and application of grade-level knowledge from the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills and helps educators evaluate student performance. SAISD officials say families can help students during tests by promoting good sleep, a healthy breakfast, and offering encouragement.
