In Case You Missed It

For the last 26 years, Concho Valley Archeology Society has hosted their annual Archeology Fair at Fort Concho. Tables were lined up and chock full of artifacts from the area and dedicated local historians ready to teach you about their curios and relics. Tables featuring arrowheads, photographs, fossils, and all sorts of left behinds from pioneer ancestors.

Sarah Thieme and Cody Golden gave a presentation on the industrial revolution and its numerous inventions. The history of American cattle drives and agriculture through a display of different kinds of barbed wire. And the story of military campaigns through the hottest technology of the day: cartridge belts.

Lisa Ball with the West Texas Genealogical and Historical Society says that studying your ancestors and their journeys “brings history to life”, and she explains the process for mapping out your family tree. “With all the technology we have today, it’s easier than ever.”

Callan Clark, with the Concho Valley Archeology Society, organized the event. He explained about the societies mission. He also works as an archeological steward, which means he assists the Texas Historical Commission archeologists and works with landowners for excavations and studies.

The day was complete with a bit of archery instruction for the kids, excavation exercises, and demonstrations on historic tools.
