Another Texas statewide election is looming, as 30 state and federal races appear again on the May 26 runoff ballots, after some candidates failed to secure more than half of the votes cast in the March Republican and Democratic primaries.
The most competitive and viral race on the ballot will be among Republicans, as Attorney General Ken Paxton challenges U.S. Senator John Cornyn for his seat. President Trump had urged one of the candidates to withdraw from the race, but neither candidate did so before the deadline.
The statewide Republican runoffs on May 26 will be for U.S. Senate, Texas Attorney General, Texas Railroad Commission, and Texas Court of Criminal Appeals Place 3. The statewide Democratic Party runoffs will be for Lieutenant Governor and Attorney General.
Texas prohibits election double-dipping, so voters who participated in a party’s primary can only vote in that party’s runoff. Voters who didn’t cast ballots in March may choose either party’s runoff.
April 27 is the last day to register to vote, and to submit an address change. May 15 is the last day to apply to vote by mail.
The in-person early voting period will be May 18-22, with Election Day on Tuesday, May 26.
