Continuing the tradition of honoring public service in May, several events are slated in San Angelo to mark Police Week May 11-15, and Armed Forces Day on May 16.
A flag-raising ceremony marked the beginning of National Police Week in the Concho Valley.
The event took place on Monday at San Angelo’s Department of Public Safety office.
The meaningful event honoring officers who lost their lives in the line of duty brought together representatives from the San Angelo Police Department, the Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office, security forces from Goodfellow Air Force Base and the DPS all united in honor of the dedicated law enforcement community.
A Memorial Run will take place, along with a special ecumenical service on Friday morning at 11 a.m. at the First Church, located on Edmund Boulevard. Everyone is invited to attend the service, which will conclude the week’s events.

Armed Forces Day at Fort Concho
Fort Concho will celebrate Armed Forces Day Saturday, May 16, with hourly artillery salutes from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Parade Ground near the Barracks 1 Visitor Center, located at 630 S. Oakes St.
Additionally, the fort staff and volunteers will display military equipment on the porch of Barracks 1.
The event serves as the annual kickoff for the Blue Star Museums Program, a summer-long initiative that generously offers free admission to all active-duty members of the U.S. Armed Forces.
According to organizers, the program aims to honor and support the brave men and women who serve our country, allowing them the opportunity to explore a variety of museums across the nation at no cost.
Running from Armed Forces Day through Labor Day (Sept 7), the initiative includes up to five family members with a valid military ID.
There is no charge to watch the artillery demonstrations or to enter the Visitor Center.
Regular fees apply for access to the other nine buildings on the site.
Special displays in the Visitor Center include the history of the San Angelo Standard-Times, Frontier Military Music, Buffalo Soldiers, and the Comanches of the Great Plains.
