The Midland Reporter Telegram reports that the Midland City Council voted unanimously to remove the city’s network of 73 Flock cameras, ending Midland’s contract with Flock Safety.
In February, the city made the decision to extend the contract with the company. However, since that time, there has been a growing number of complaints from residents of Midland regarding the company’s troubling history of privacy violations. These concerns have raised significant alarm among council members, prompting them to reconsider their partnership with the firm.
According to the contract termination, the City of Midland, under the direction of City Manager Tommy Gonzalez, will issue a 60-day written notice for the removal of the cameras. This action is projected to save $225,500, which is the total amount of the second-year subscription payment, provided that the termination takes effect before the billing date of January 15, 2027.
Flock is contractually required to provide a pro-rata refund for any first-year fees that were paid for services beyond the termination date. The contract does not impose any early termination fees or penalties. Additionally, Flock is responsible for removing hardware and restoring the site at no cost to the city.
