A benefit will be held for the family of Kash Nelson, the infant who suffered massive injuries following an accident in March of last year, on April 25 at the Christoval Icehouse, in Christoval, TX.
“Kash Day” will begin at 9 a.m. with a 5K walk, followed by a silent auction and musical performances throughout the day, details below.
You might have seen the words “Prayers for Kash” around San Angelo; on lawn signs, billboards, and shop windows.
In March of 2025, Kash Nelson, 1, managed to crawl out of the house through a doggy door, where he then crawled further and fell into the swimming pool.
According to past reports, the boy was likely underwater for several minutes before his aunt was able to rescue him and perform CPR, which saved his life. Kash was hospitalized and in critical condition for some time.
The accident led to immense complications, including traumatic brain injury.
His grandfather, Rodney Fleming, spoke to the Concho Observer and shared some challenges the Nelson family faces in the months and years ahead.
Kash has made progress following the accident, but still has a long road ahead.
“We’ve had tons and tons of support throughout the year. His father, Matt, is unable to work because they’re taking care of Kash 24-hours a day,” said Fleming.
“They have two nurses that are almost full time and one that is part time, but Matt has to stay up every night from 9:30 at night until 6 in the morning.”
Fleming said that the family is very thankful for the community support, and the go-fund-me that raised tens of thousands for medical care. But the family is still waiting for government assistance to come through, despite it being over a year since the accident.
Since that time, the family has been working to promote safety measures to prevent incidents like this from ever happening again:
“One of the things we’ve been trying to stress is the importance of putting fences around swimming pools.
“He wasn’t supposed to survive more than a week, but he kept getting better. He’s doing a lot better, he’s starting to communicate,” he said, but shared that there have been further complications and setbacks the family was not expecting.
Between travelling back and forth to Dell’s Children Hospital in Austin, and paying for his medical care, the family is asking for community support for the benefit. “We’re humbled by how much people love to help,” Fleming said.
Registration for the 5K will end at 9 a.m, and the run will begin at 9:30 a.m., donation of $40 dollars per person will go toward the families medical expenses. Followed by BBQ plates, a silent auction, and live music. The event will be held at the Christoval Icehouse, 19965 Main St., Christoval, TX.
