On Friday, members of the San Angelo City Council who have become the targets of a recall effort by a grassroots organization protesting a proposed data center provided individual statements about the situation.

San Angelo Mayor Tom Thompson, center, fields questions during a press conference at City Hall on Friday, July 11, after receiving the federal disaster declaration from July 4 flooding.

Statement from Mayor Tom Thompson

Public service comes with scrutiny, and elected officials should expect to be questioned, challenged and held accountable. Honest criticism is part of the democratic process.

At the same time, public discussion should remain grounded in facts, credible information and the full context of the issues before our city. Local government has a responsibility to make decisions consistently, fairly and in the best interest of all residents.

Leadership is not always about choosing the easiest or most popular path. It is about making responsible decisions, even when they are difficult. My focus remains on serving the citizens of San Angelo, addressing the work before us and helping move our community forward.

Statement from Council Member Joe Self, District 2

Serving on City Council is a responsibility that comes with both support and criticism. Citizens have the right to voice concerns, participate in the democratic process, and expect accountability from those elected to serve them.

My focus remains on the work ahead of us. Decisions must be guided by facts, fairness and what is in the best interest of the entire community. While public disagreement is part of leadership, it should never distract from the responsibility to address challenges, pursue opportunities and make thoughtful decisions for the future.

I remain committed to serving this community, listening to its citizens and continuing the work necessary to move us forward.

Statement from Council Member Harry Thomas, District 3

Thomas

For the past 10 years, I have had the privilege of serving this community on City Council. That service has always required making decisions carefully, listening to different perspectives and keeping the long-term interests of the city at the center of the work.

I recognize and respect that residents have the right to question their elected officials and use the processes available to them. Public accountability is an important part of local government, and I take that responsibility seriously.

At this time, my priority remains the same: to continue focusing on the issues before the city, to evaluate decisions based on facts and fairness, and to serve in a way that reflects the needs of the community as a whole.
