Near the end of Tuesday’s regular Commissioners Court meeting, Pct. 4 Comm. Shawn Nanny took a moment to thank all of the volunteer firefighters in Tom Green County who spent the Independence Day weekend knocking down fires, some of them well into the early morning hours of July 5th.
“I’d like to express my appreciation to all of the volunteer fire departments over the weekend. Saturday, Dove Creek responded to 15 calls … there were many small fire that they were on top of, and had out promptly, and kept a lot of country from burning,” Nanny said.
“If you see one of those volunteer firemen in the county, you might pat them on the back, or buy them a cup of coffee and thank them.”
Pct. 3 Comm. Rick Bacon said to the court there had been 45 fireworks related mishaps requiring a response, and he praised them for being ready.
“They were busy,” Bacon said, “I think the last one was around 3 O’clock in the morning … so, we really appreciate those guys.”
Although the area did receive some much-needed rain over the weekend, commissioners took no action on the recently reimposed county-wide burn ban.
The New County Shop
Needing some space upgrades, the effort to outfit a new County Shop in the 1800 block of South Chadbourne Street are moving more swiftly now, as the court approved a motion to authorize setting up all the utilities.
The project is being spearheaded by Comm. Nanny.
The first County Shop was created by commissioners in 1931 as a way to save money on costly repairs by doing things in-house, which was credited with saving the county about $4,000 a year in the beginning of the Great Depression.
In other business:
- The court withdrew from the San Angelo TIRZ program
- Transferred several vehicles from the Sheriff’s Office to “Surplus”
- Approved an interlocal agreement with the City of San Angelo, and a resolution in support of the 2025 Edward Byrne Justice Assistance Grant providing funds for radar equipment used by the Sheriff’s Office.
