The Tom Green County Commissioners approved a new agreement to help keep victims of crime updated about offenders.
During a regular Commissioners Court meeting on Tuesday, the County entered into a new agreement with SylogistGov, Inc. to participate in the Texas Statewide Automated Victim Notification Service (SAVNS), a program that provides free, anonymous notifications to crime victims — and concerned citizens — about changes in an offender’s custody status, and related court events.
The system delivers updates via phone, email, or text message in both English and Spanish, providing notifications when an offender is released, transferred, escapes, or dies, in addition to court dates being scheduled or changed.
According to the company, the service gathers information from county jails and courts across Texas into a centralized database.
Police Officers Week and Police Officers Memorial Day
The court unanimously approved a proclamation declaring May 12–18 as Police Officers Week, and May 14 as Police Officers Memorial Day.
Sheriff David Hanna spoke on the item, referencing the national observance’s establisment in 1962.
“Each year since 1962, when President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May the 15th as Police Officer Memorial Day, [we’ve marked] the week that it falls in as Police Officer’s Week,” said Hanna.
The proclamation honored the role of law enforcement in safeguarding public safety and freedoms, stating, “We honor the heroism of all law enforcement officers, especially those who have given their lives so that others may live.”
New Trees Coming to Courthouse
In other business, the court approved a grant application to H-E-B Trees for Texas to support planting native trees around the courthouse.
Pct. 4 Comm. Shawn Nanny introduced the item, noting that several dead trees have been removed and needed replacing.
“With those trees being removed, I think there’s a dire need to get something else planted out there to provide shade, and that’s a focal point of our County. Planting trees will have some generational benefits,” Nanny said.
He added that the grant would essentially function as a donation, with the goal of improving the courthouse grounds with native tree species.
