It’s time for the annual change-of-smell as the San Angelo Water Utilities Department changes its method of disinfecting the public water supply from June 1 to June 30.
According to city staff, the annual maintenance is essential for preserving the integrity of the water distribution system.
During this time, consumers may notice slight changes in the smell, taste, and appearance of their water as the system is flushed with free chlorine. The Water Utilities Department typically uses chloramine, a combination of ammonia and chlorine, for disinfection.
These changes typically subside within a couple of weeks, and officials assure the public that the water is safe for all normal uses, and chlorine levels will be monitored daily to ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements.
