Another West Texas expansion is coming for Shannon Health System, as they announced they are in the process of purchasing the assets of Scenic Mountain Medical Center in Big Spring Friday.
Scenic Mountain Medical Center is a full service, acute care, 146-bed community hospital.

Shannon officials stress that residents in and around the Big Spring area will see additional providers, with expanded primary and specialty care space, and increased options for treatment across many disciplines.
The assets of Scenic Mountain Medical Center are being purchased from Quorum Health, continuing Shannon’s investments in the region, including the 2024 acquisition of West Texas Medical Plaza.
Shannon will be remodeling specific areas of the facility to create a new urgent care clinic and expand diagnostic capabilities.
Shane Plymel, the President and CEO of Shannon, says that through their current Big Spring Clinic, they have learned that the community needs additional, specialized, local health care. He says the move will bring more care and resources to the Big Spring area.
The purchase process is expected to take several months, with officials saying that in the meantime, nothing will change for patients or employees.
Scenic Mountain Medical Center evolved from the former Big Spring Veterans Administration Hospital, which was established in 1950.
In 2004, Big Spring VA was identified for possible closure, with a proposed move of all services to Midland-Odessa. In April 2006, the Capital Asset Realignment for Enhanced Services (CARES) commission recommended the hospital facility stay open with modifications and expanded services.
