The Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office is alerting residents about a recent phone scam that has been reported multiple times.
Several people have contacted the Sheriff’s Office about phone calls from someone pretending to be a deputy from the Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office. The scammer claims they have an outstanding warrant and tells them to pay a fine at specific retail stores.
Sheriff’s officials warn that caller ID numbers may be spoofed to look legitimate. Officers will never call you to demand payment in order to avoid arrest. You will not be told to pay fines at a retail store.
If someone asks you to pay using gift cards, wire transfers, or similar methods, it is likely a scam. Scammers often impersonate real law enforcement officers to carry out these frauds.
Residents who receive this type of call should hang up immediately and avoid providing any personal or financial information.
The Sheriff’s Office urges residents to share this warning, especially with elderly citizens who are often targeted by scammers.
