This safety poster contest winner attends a school where TxDOT data showed a high number of distracted-driving crashes near the campus. TxDOT employees turned her artwork into a sign drivers see when they approach the school’s drop-off lane.

Student artists in the area have until April 15 to submit their artwork in the Texas Department of Transportation’s Safety Art Contest.

The contest is open to students in kindergarten through 8th Grade who live in TxDOT’s San Angelo District, which includes Coke, Concho, Crockett, Edwards, Glasscock, Irion, Kimble, Menard, Reagan, Real, Runnels, Schleicher, Sterling, Sutton, and Tom Green counties.

What’s the Idea?

The poster contest aims to showcase students’ creativity while building awareness about serious highway-safety topics.

Submissions can be created using crayons, markers, paint, computers, or another medium.

Artwork will be split into two categories: K through 4th Grade, and 5th through 8th Grade, and submissions will be judged by TxDOT employees.

Each submission must:

  • Be six-by-nine inches in size
  • Include student’s name, grade, school, and county
  • Have a title
  • Contain a short description of one or two sentences explaining the message
  • Be submitted to the nearest drop off location or mailed in by April 15, 2025.

Safety themes

Poster should focus on a traffic safety theme such as:

  • Buckle Up – Always Wear Your Seat Belt
  • Eyes on the Road – No Texting & Driving
  • Stay Alert in School Zones

Contest winners will receive a certificate, and their artwork will be displayed at the TxDOT district headquarters.

The winning designs will also be turned into postcards for outreach.
