What do the words Hoghead, Crummy, Highball, Saw-By, and Cow Catcher have in common? They’re slang terms from the rich history and culture of the American railroad.
The Railway Museum of San Angelo will celebrate National Train Days May 9-10, bringing the rich past of railroads to life.
Activities will take place at the Railway Museum and the nearby Pearl on the Concho Hotel and Conference Center during the Model Train Jamboree, including model train displays, treats, talks, and storytelling, along with model-train vendors, workshops, and hourly door prizes.
Attendees will likely hear about famous railroad legends, Casey Jones, John Henry, and Kate Shelley, the girl who became a hero in 1881 by warning a passenger train of a collapsed trestle.
The event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 9, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 10.
Tickets for the event are $10 for adults, $9 for military and first responders, $7 for children ages 5-15, and free for children under 5. Vendors are $40 per table.
Don’t Miss the Play!
This year, the Railway Museum will present an original historical play, “On the Right Track” on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from May 9-17. Guests will join the Harvey Girls for treats and tea served with a side of true train history, as railroading heroes like Arthur Stilwell and Fred Harvey come back to life.
