OBITUARY

Hershel E “Gene” Green, age 91, passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 17, 2026.

Gene was born on April 2, 1934, in Belle Plaine, KS to Hershel H Green and Lucille Moore. Although he was born in Kansas, he moved to Oklahoma at a very young age and proudly claimed it as his home state-he was truly an Okie at heart.

After graduating from high school in Mooreland, OK, Gene attended college for one year before enlisting in the United States Army, a service he was extremely proud of. Following his tour in Germany, he was honorably discharged and returned to school at Oklahoma State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Engineering.

Shortly after graduation, Gene began his career with the Santa Fe Railroad and married Patsy Leeth. His career took the family throughout Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. He retired at the age of 55 as a Division Engineer.

Gene was preceded in death by his wife, Patsy Green; his son, Kevin Green; his parents, Hershel and Lucille Green; his stepmother, Dorothy Green; and two grandchildren, Jessika and Jordan Burke.

He is survived by his loving children: Debbie Mackey and husband Tony, Jana Casey and Cindy Burke; grandchildren Kaci Casey, Reagan Larsen, Blake McKee, Travis Mackey and Ty Mackey; and numerous great grandchildren who brought him immense joy.

Gene had many lifelong friends and treasured his golfing buddies. He especially loved playing golf at Bentwood Country Club and had great affection for the Bentwood staff and community. He enjoyed sharing stories about his military service and his years with the Santa Fe Railroad.

Gene was devoted to his church and Sunday School class at First Methodist Church. He was also a lifelong member of the Woodland, Oklahoma Masonic Lodge and proudly served as a Shriner.

Above all, Gene was an incredible father who set a strong example for his children through his character, work ethic and love.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, January 22, at 9 a.m. at Fairmount Cemetery, located at 1120 West Avenue N, in San Angelo, directed by Harper Funeral Home.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Gene’s many friends for their calls and visits during his illness, and especially to Nurse Billie for her compassionate care.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Shriners Children’s Hospital.
