Gutting Medicaid Is Attack On Rural America

Elon Musk is waging war on rural America, and he is doing it by gutting Medicaid. With Musk pulling the strings and Trump standing idly by, Musk is pushing for up to $880 billion in Medicaid cuts over the next decade. The result? Absolute devastation for small towns, farming communities, and working-class Americans who rely on Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) to survive. Medicaid provides coverage for adults, whereas CHIP is only for children.

As of October 2024, 4.2 million Texans were enrolled in Medicaid and CHIP.  Nationwide, these programs provide health and long-term care to 80 million low-income children, pregnant women, adults, seniors, and people with disabilities. Medicaid isn’t some niche welfare program—it’s a lifeline. And Musk and Trump want to rip it away.

Rural hospitals are already on life support, and these cuts will pull the plug. Medicaid reimbursements keep these facilities open; without them, hospitals in small towns will close, leaving people with nowhere to turn when they need care. Imagine a sick child with no doctor for miles or a heart attack victim with no hospital nearby. That’s the reality Musk and Trump are creating.

MAGA’s Rely On Medicaid Too

Slashing this funding would unleash fiscal shockwaves nationwide, ripping billions of federal dollars from state budgets. State governments would be forced into brutal choices—stripping coverage from vulnerable beneficiaries, slashing payments to doctors, denying home care to seniors, or hiking state taxes to fill the gaping hole. Even longtime Trump ally Steve Bannon recently issued a blunt warning: “A lot of MAGA’s on Medicaid,” emphasizing, “[you] just can’t take a meat ax to it, although I would love to.”

And what about the elderly and disabled? Medicaid is the primary payer for long-term care in nursing homes. Without it, families will be forced to empty their savings or let their loved ones suffer. This is not just cruel—it’s an attack on our most vulnerable citizens.

The hypocrisy is staggering. While billionaires like Musk keep hoarding wealth and Trump dishes out tax cuts to the ultra-rich, everyday Americans are left to die without healthcare. This isn’t about “fiscal responsibility”—it’s about greed. It’s about a ruling class that sees rural Americans as expendable, not worth the cost of keeping alive. Rural voters cannot sit back and take this inhumanity from Trump’s buddy – Elon Musk.  Medicaid isn’t just a government program—it’s the backbone of rural healthcare. And if Trump, Musk, and their Congressional enablers continue this assault, they should face angry rural voters at every town hall meeting that their Congressional representative dares to hold.

Constance Truthe is absolutely right—these proposed Medicaid cuts are a direct assault on rural communities like ours. Medicaid isn’t just a line item; it’s the lifeblood of our healthcare system, especially in rural Texas. Without it, our hospitals face closure, leaving countless Texans without essential medical services. It’s infuriating to see the wealthy get tax breaks while hardworking folks are left without basic healthcare. We must stand together and fight these cuts to protect the health and well-being of our communities.
