New leadership has been chosen to manage West Texas Public Media stations this week, as Texas Tech University officials named Julie Grimes as the new executive director of Texas Tech Public Media.

Grimes is a West Texas native and former Texas Tech student, and she will lead the PBS and NPR local stations in Lubbock, San Angelo, and El Paso.

Public media across the nation lost a major source of funding last year as the federal government withdrew its support for Public TV and Radio stations, as funding was cut from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting by Congress.

Grimes says she will work to elevate the stations and look for new collaborations and community building to tell the important stories emerging from around the West Texas area, and spread those stories through PBS and NPR distribution channels.

Along with partnerships and community building, Grimes will face the challenge of developing a sustainable fundraising model to support Texas Public Media operations, as well as meet new technological demands in order to successfully serve its audience.

The local Texas Public Media station in San Angelo is KNCH Radio, broadcasting at 90.1 FM as an NPR station.

KNCH introduces new programs

KNCH-FM recently added several new programs to the lineup.

“Sports in America” with David Greene airs Sundays at 9 a.m. featuring in-depth conversations with people throughout the world of sports.

“This Old House Radio Hour” follows at 10 a.m. Sundays focusing on home improvement, renovations and DIY projects.

Overnights, “Classical 24” from American Public Media transports listeners through a wilderness of Classical Music masterworks, airing Monday through Saturday from midnight to 5 a.m., and Sundays from 10 p.m. to dawn.

Also new to KNCH, “The Daily” is a New York Times production looking at the people behind the news, now airing weekdays at 6:30 p.m.

Rounding out the new programs, is “Think,” airing at 7 p.m. weekdays.

Originating at KERA in Dallas, “Think” is a national talk-radio program featuring journalist Krys Boyd who interviews newsmakers from around the world.
