Fort Concho
History buffs will once again have a chance to enjoy a lunch hour of special presentations featuring guest speakers at Fort Concho National Historic Landmark on Wednesdays this September.
According to a news release from the fort, the talks will now feature a bit of extra history as members of the Fort Concho staff describe highlights from Fort Concho.
The series begins Sept. 2, as Deborah Moran, a historical re-enactor with the Daughters of the American Revolution delivers a discourse on Dolly Madison, followed on Sept. 9 by Lisa Mahler’s presentation on the Signers of the Declaration of Independence. Mahler will also appear Sept. 16 for a discussion about the Bill of Rights.
Mahler serves as vice regent for the local chapter of The Daughters of the American Revolution.
On Sept. 23, Charles Anderson will focus on The Star-Spangled Banner, and Dr. Joyce Gray will close out the month with her presentation on how Texas became part of the United States.
Dr. Gray is a local historian and serves as president of the Fort Concho Chapter of The Daughters of the Republic of Texas. She has served as the primary organizer of the speaker series for many years.
Fort Concho Speaker events are held from noon to 1 p.m. in the Commissary Building, 702 Burgess St.
The events are free and open to the public, and folks are welcome to bring along a sack lunch if they like.
