San Angelo Will Host Two Drag-Boat Races for 2026

The San Angelo City Council recently approved a request from the International Hot Rod Assn. to add Lake Nasworthy to the drag boat racing calendar for Oct. 2-4, when they will hold the world finals following the normal summer dates, which are set for June 26–28.

According to an email from the IHRA’s Cody Childress on March 2, the deal was contingent on the council approving both events for the same $10,000 price tag the Southern Drag Boat Assn. paid to hold two events at the lake in previous years.

The Association also agrees to pay for security and EMS personnel, and to clean up, making sure the parks are in pristine condition before and after each event.

According to an estimate from the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce in 2019, the annual races have an economic impact in excess of $5 million for a single event.
