Tuesday morning, City Council voted 6-1 to rezone a parcel of land north of town on US Highway 67 from Ranch & Estate to Light Manufacturing, and another request to amend the Comprehensive Plan to reflect an Industrial zoning for 345.27 acres south of the intersection of N US Hwy 67 & Harriett Rd. These changes would allow future construction of data and communication centers in the zoned land.

Before the vote, council heard from numerous residents and business owners, who came to speak about the talk of the town in the last month: data centers.

Item number Z25-24 near Womack Tank on US Highway 67.

Discussions of potential data center development were restricted to the public comment portion at the beginning of the meeting, which was not related to the public comment portion of the rezoning hearing. This led to some frustration, and several pointed comments, which will be reported soon.

Light Manufacturing is the classification used for large server storage or processing facilities, among other types of data centers.
