FOOD AND WINE

By Joshua Hockett

I was confused when the company facebook page suddenly vanished from the web, and no answer when you called. Then, other locals began to ask me if I knew anything as well. ‘What’s up with Sugar High Bake Shop?’

It is with a heavy heart and a sugar-deprived soul that I must confirm the rumors circulating through the Concho Valley: Sugar High Bake Shop has officially and permanently closed its doors.

For those who followed my coverage when they first opened in early January 2024, you know I had high hopes for this local gem. They didn’t just meet those expectations; they blew them out of the water. From their “vastly popular” stuffed cookies to those decadent cookie pies, and over the top brownies and lemon bars that could make a grown adult weep with joy, Sugar High quickly became a staple of our downtown.

Clearing the Air: Why Now?

Whenever a beloved local business shutters, the rumor mill starts spinning faster than a kitchen mixer. Let’s set the record straight on a few things.

First, I reached out to the previous ownership to get the story directly from the source. They confirmed that while the cyber attack of false negative reviews reported back in October was certainly a localized nightmare and incredibly damaging at the time, it was not the catalyst for this closure. The team had successfully navigated those digital hurdles and moved forward.

Instead, the end of Sugar High comes down to the complexities of human collaboration. My correspondence with the owners revealed that the closure stemmed from a division of the business partnership. Unfortunately, after a period of negotiation, buyout terms could not be reached between the parties involved. When the gears of a partnership stop turning, the ovens eventually follow suit.

A Short But Sweet Legacy

It feels like only yesterday we were celebrating their grand opening. In their short tenure, Sugar High evolved from a dessert destination into something even more ambitious. They had recently begun delving into the world of deli sandwiches and wraps, a move that showed immense promise for the lunchtime downtown crowd.

As a regular customer, I was personally rooting for the “Salty and Sweet” combo that a deli-bakery hybrid offers. Sadly, we won’t get to see where that new culinary direction would have taken them.

It’s a loss for the downtown culture. We weren’t just losing a bakery; we were losing a community gathering spot that brought a little extra flavor to the city and the Concho Valley.

A Personal Note

I won’t lie—I’m taking this one a bit personally. My freezer was rarely without a stash of their stuffed cookies, and their presence on that downtown corner felt like a sign of the vibrant growth we’ve all been cheering for in San Angelo.

To the staff and the creative minds behind the treats: thank you. Thank you for the sugar rushes, the friendly smiles, and for giving us a reason to walk a few extra blocks for a snack.

While the storefront may be dark and the mixers silent, the impact they made on our local food scene won’t be forgotten anytime soon.

For now, we’ll just have to cherish the memories (and the lingering calories) of San Angelo’s sweetest short-lived venture.

Rest in peace, Sugar High. You were too sweet for this world.
