West Texas Counseling and Guidance (WTCG) has partnered with the Tom Green County Juvenile Justice Center (JJC) to offer a unique form of emotional support for detained youth, ages 13-17: artistic intervention.
Art intervention sessions are held every Saturday morning, from 8:30-11:30 a.m.
“This art intervention program is designed to engage participants in creative expression through loosely based curriculum that can include such techniques as painting, drawing, coloring, sculpting, processing,” said Rebecca Zappata, Clinical Director of West Texas Counseling and Guidance.
These guided artistic activities focus on emotional regulation, self-expression, and creative connection between peers.
West Texas Counseling and Guidance recently issued a public call for more volunteers to help lead sessions. The opportunity to teach a class is open to anyone who is passionate about supporting children and teens with empathy and creative expression.
No prior art or clinical experience required – however, whoever joins the program must pass a mandatory background check. This opportunity is especially valuable for counseling or social work students looking to gain direct service hours and experience.
Zapata says this partnership promotes positive youth development in our community. It does so by meeting young people where they are – and sometimes that healing starts with a blank canvas and a paintbrush.
