This Thanksgiving, turkeys weren’t the only ones facing harm.
On November 27, 2025, Johnson County Sherriff’s Office in Alvarado, Texas, responded to a report of suspected animal cruelty and illegal cockfighting, leading to approximately 25 arrests.
Officials say that, upon arrival to the scene, a large group of people immediately scattered, fleeing from law enforcement.
Three juveniles were also located at the scene. They were released to family members who took no part in the illegal activities.
With help from Nature’s Edge Wildlife Rehabilitation, 74 roosters were rescued from the property, including two that suffered serious injuries.
Upon the seizure of evidence during the raid, law enforcement confiscated trophies for winners of the fights.

“We will gladly take it off their hands and place it into the Sheriff’s Office property room where it will await the trial date,” said Johnson’s County Sheriff’s Office.
This raid follows just days after another animal fighting ring – this time involving dogs – was discovered in Texas.
Anyone who suspects animal abuse or neglect should report immediately to the appropriate channels.
As communities, we must stay vigilant and be the voices for those who can’t speak for themselves.
