Organizers in San Angelo are calling for like minded people to join them Monday for President’s Day to protest and speak truth to the most powerful class in America, billionaires.
China Young, one of the organizers said it’s important that we have a local protest.
“I think that many of us had concerns about Trump winning the election,” she said. “But I don’t think any of us anticipated the speed with everything that’s happened already; the way they have started to dismantle our system, and the Constitution.
“I don’t think we can count on the courts to save us, and I’m afraid things are beginning to remind me how things were in Hungary, and of how their democracy crumbled.
“If there was ever a time to organize something like this, it’s now.”
“I believe that in San Angelo, being such a conservative stronghold, it’s important for people who feel differently about the current conservative movement to know they are not alone, and that not everybody is falling for this stuff.
“It seems like MAGA Republicans bully anyone who has different values …So I think the visibility of people protesting what’s happening will encourage others to not be afraid to speak out, and show up and start mobilizing.”
The local event ties into a wider national effort aiming to foster protests in every state of the union on a single day, in opposition to authoritarianism, fascism, bigotry and injustice.
“I’ve been saying that we need to show up locally, instead of everybody going to Austin,” she said. “It’s great for them to have a big protest at the Capitol, but that’s Austin… when we show up locally, we get so much help from our local community.”
A previous round of 50-50-1 protests took place in capital cities on Feb. 5. This round was focused on protests at city hall buildings.
She said they have planned speakers, and some other performative elements, including song and a reading from Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar.”
Anyone who would like to attend is encouraged to gather at high-noon on the steps of San Angelo’s City Hall, 72 W. College Ave, in downtown San Angelo.

What is China Young’s contact info or the organizer’s info for contact? I would have liked to have been there and want to take part in the future. How do I find out what’s going on to stay informed?
