San Angelo City Manager Daniel Valenzuela has announced his intention to retire, formally providing a one-year notice; his effective retirement date is Oct. 31, 2026, according to a news bulletin from the city.

“I have been continually humbled by the dedication, professionalism and compassion of the people who make San Angelo such a special place,” Valenzuela said. “From our city council members and city staff to the many residents, partners and organizations committed to our shared success.”

Valenzuela grew up in Fort Stockton, and joined the Army following his high school graduation. After being honorably discharged in 1993, he attended Texas Tech University and holds an MBA from that school.

Valenzuela said he plans to remain active in the community after retirement.

Follwing a stint at Midland College Regional Traning Center, he worked as an administrator at Pecos County Memorial Hospital, before accepting a job as city manager for Fort Stockton in 2003.

In 2007, he moved over to Eagle Pass where he served as city manager until coming to San Angelo in 2012.

Mayor Tom Thompson praised Valenzuela’s leadership and dedication to public service.

“Daniel has been more than a city manager – he’s been a trusted advisor and a steady presence through every chapter of our city’s growth,” Mayor Tom Thompson said. “His integrity, calm leadership and deep commitment to San Angelo have made a lasting impression on me and on everyone who’s had the privilege to work alongside him.”

Valenzuela said he plans to remain active in the community after retirement and looks forward to spending more time with his family.

According to city officials, with the assistance of a recruiting firm, the city council will begin a search for Valenzuela’s successor.
