With the Halloween deadline for final submissions in the San Angelo Business Plan Competition past, participants have just a few days left to finalize their in-person presentations before the judges during a closed event Nov. 7.
According to Dezaray Johnson with the Angelo State University Small Business Development Center, this year’s competition drew almost 40 applicants, with six finalists selected for Phase Two.

2024 San Angelo Business Plan Competition Winners

Rankin Transmissions
Last year’s first-place winner was Rankin Transmissions, receiving a $50,000 cash prize, owner Stephen McLaughlin, who grew as part of his family’s business, and later returned to help his father. The business, located at 925 Glenna St., has been in business for six decades, expanding now to offer rebuilt transmissions throughout Texas, and nationally.
Angelo Donuts

Second place honors, and a cash prize of $30,000 was awarded to Angelo Donuts and Kolaches, a local family-owned donut shop. Owners Sokun Voeun and his wife, Vicky Eang, have a decade of experience in the donut shop business. They have locations at 3119 Knickerbocker Rd., 1705 S. Bryant Blvd. and 3806 Sherwood Way.
The Canine Resort & Daycare

Last year’s third-place winner, receiving a $20,000 cash prize was The Canine Resort & Daycare owned by Kathryne Herrera, with family members Robert and Erica Talamantes. The Canine Resort & Daycare is located at 1530 Fairview School Rd.
Winners will be announced during the scheduled City of San Angelo Development Corporation meeting on Nov. 12.
