OPINION
The recent walkout at Central High School protesting the tactics of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (I.C.E.) was not an isolated incident. It is part of numerous similar protests in High Schools across the state.
Judging from their reactions this makes Governor Abbott and other leaders, including some school districts and administrators very nervous. They should be.
Mass Deportation: Theory vs. Reality
The Federal and State Government’s policy is to deport every person who is not a citizen of the United States who has overstayed a visa, seeks asylum or who was not born here and has black or brown skin.
The tactics they use and the indiscriminate manner in which they go after our friends and neighbors who have been living among us for decades, rather than the hardened gang member and criminals they claimed they wanted removed, has outraged a large majority of Americans.
Our Students Learned Their History Well
For all of the claimed failings of our education system and our public schools, the kids have certainly learned their American history well.
Only pressure and protest will stop the powerful and the wealthy idealogues who want to remake our country in their own image.
The powerful in this country never stop doing anything voluntarily.
Every gain in this country — independence and self-government, the end of slavery, stopping an unjust war, the right to vote, civil rights, direct election of senators, women’s suffrage, the right to work, the right to own property, one person one vote — all of these were gained by the people resisting the powerful.
This present obsession with cruelty on the part of our government and its officers will eventually pass away. But it will not pass away if we as citizens do not oppose them.
That does not mean that everyone must take to the streets. But every person must resist in their own community, in their own way, in a thousand little acts by refusing to cooperate with our government, its officers and the wealthy and powerful.
The end of cruelty, violence and discord is coming. But it will only come through resistance.
Follow the students. They are leading the way.
