Several rooms filled with captivating early Texas art greeted visitors to the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts on Thursday evening, as guests were treated to the opening reception for the museum’s newest exhibit, “Honoring a Texas Legacy: Treasured Gifts from Bill & Mary Cheek and their Friends.”
Starting in 2010, art collectors and patrons Bill and Mary Cheek played a central role in developing the Museum of Fine Arts’ collection of early Texas art. About 60 pieces of art are in the exhibition and are in the museum’s permanent collection.
The museum is also showing a curated selection of works by the 2025 EnPleinAir TEXAS Ranch Fellowship. The exhibit is called “Spirit of the Ranch.” Artists showing works include Kirsten Anderson, Zufar Bikbov, Lon Brauer, Durre Waseem, and Jeff Williams.
Due to inclement weather, the panel discussion about the Texas Legacy exhibit from the Cheeks and their friends, originally scheduled for Friday evening has been postponed until further notice.
The exhibits will be on display during regular museum hours until March 22. Gallery admission is free.
