Nook & Press, a new book lounge opening this November in San Angelo, promises to be the perfect spot for readers of all kinds.

Owner Jaton Hampton – already locally known for starting Paintbrush Alley Market Days in 2021 –  is eager to bring one more cozy spot for literature lovers to our area.

She sees Nook & Press as “a space for people to come, grab a coffee and a book, bring a friend, and get some work done” all while exploring a passion for turning the page.

Jaton was born and raised in San Angelo, and her family has deep roots here. She said preserving the city’s charm and small business spirit is part of what inspired her in this venture.

“We have a really strong love for supporting small businesses,” she told me.

“It’s great when we can get the big names to come here – but it’s the small businesses of our town that make us so unique.”

Nook & Press is spacious yet intimate. During our visit, the shop was still being transformed, but the vision of a dark academia reading wonderland was already coming together: classic floral art hangs above rows of shelves, and jewel-toned velvet couches invite you to settle in with your favorite murder mystery and a hot tea.

And there’s a lovely little meeting room in the back for book clubs, friends, dates –  you name it.

Jaton is on a mission to make the space feel timeless and comforting.

“I want it to be dark and cozy and warm, and I want it to remind you of going to your grandma’s house and grabbing a book, finding a corner, and reading.”

It’s important to Jaton that she encourages the next generation to read as well. With two young children of her own, she is constantly reminded of the value of inspiring curiosity through literature at a young age. And at Nook & Press, the children’s section is going to be perfect for just that.

I won’t give too much of the surprise away, but let’s just say Jaton is envisioning a faraway, magical place of reading and wonder when they come to visit.

While Nook & Press hopes to fill some of the gaps in genres that other bookshops might not carry, Jaton is clear on one thing: she is not here to compete with other local businesses.

She said small businesses should uplift each other, and — in the spirit of community and collaboration — the shop will also have a gift section including pottery by local artists.

As we enter autumn, the itch to hibernate with a novel inches closer – and Nook & Press might become one of your favorite scratching posts.

Nook & Press will be located in Southwest Plaza.
