Voices of the Concho Valley

In a softly lit studio tucked away in San Angelo, where calming music plays quietly in the background, Dana Lowe is offering a different kind of self-care experience.

Lowe is the founder of The Moonbeam Studio, a business she opened in October 2022 that blends haircare services with holistic wellness.

Her approach attracts clients from across the Concho Valley, and beyond, who are looking for more than a traditional salon appointment.

“I was born and raised right here in San Angelo,” Lowe told The Concho Observer. “I’ve been in the beauty industry for over a decade. While I loved the creative side of hair, I always felt called to something deeper, to break the stigmas within the beauty culture.”

That desire for something deeper led her to Reiki, a Japanese energy-healing practice that she says had a major impact on her life.

As she began incorporating Reiki into her own routine, it gradually became a central part of her work—and eventually, the foundation for The Moonbeam Studio.

She describes it as a space for “sacred self-care,” a phrase that reflects the emotional and spiritual intention behind her services.

Rethinking the Salon Experience

For Lowe, the idea for the studio emerged after growing disillusioned with conventional salon environments.

“Experiences like double-booking, toxic metals and chemicals in the products, and a lack of genuine connection to the person in the chair showed me how much was missing,” she said.

She imagined a slower, more focused alternative: “a little sanctuary where guests can experience a soft landing, a slower pace, one-on-one private reservations, and clean, holistic haircare while also being invited to relax, be seen, and reconnect with themselves.”

“I believe beauty begins with energy, and that vision became The Moonbeam Studio,” she said.

At her studio, Lowe emphasizes intention in every aspect of the guest experience—from the products she uses to the environment she’s created.

“For a first-time guest, it feels like stepping out of the noise of everyday life and into a cozy calm haven.

From the energy of the studio itself, to the delicate details and intentional way that each offering is carried out, everything is designed to help the guest feel held, nourished, and renewed inside-and-out,” she said.

A Focus on Healing

Among the studio’s most distinctive offerings are Reiki sessions and Hairplay Healing, both of which have become staples for returning clients.

“Reiki is a gentle Japanese healing practice that connects you to universal life force energy,” Lowe explained. “It clears blockages, calms the nervous system, and opens space for deep rest and renewal.”

Hairplay Healing is another service that integrates tactile relaxation techniques. Using jade combs, bamboo brushes, and scalp-to-shoulder massage, Lowe helps clients unwind from accumulated stress.

“Guests are invited to gently slip into a state of soft presence,” she said. “It’s the most unique offering here… so much so that they often pair it with their haircut and turn their regular hair routine services into a healing retreat.”

According to Lowe, clients often leave feeling both physically refreshed and emotionally supported.

“Guests leave here not only looking beautiful but also feeling deeply cared for,” she said. “My hope is that everyone who walks into this space knows that they won’t be the same when they leave.”

Expanding the Vision Beyond San Angelo

Now approaching its third anniversary, The Moonbeam Studio has grown into more than just a local business. Lowe sees it as part of a larger shift in how people define beauty and wellness.

“I see The Moonbeam Studio as both a safe haven and a movement,” she said. “One that challenges the traditional norms of beauty and wellness while growing a beautiful community of Reiki practitioners.”

This fall, she’s expanding her work by hosting two Women’s Reiki Certification Workshops, scheduled for Oct. 10–12, and Nov. 14–16. She also plans to collaborate more with other holistic professionals and expand her online offerings. Those interested in participating or learning more about the workshops and upcoming offerings can visit The Moonbeam Studio’s website for details.

Redefining Self-Care in a Fast-Paced World

According to Lowe, clients travel from nearby towns like Ballinger and Eden, drawn by the studio’s unique focus.

“I think people are drawn to the uniqueness,” she said. “There’s a hunger for more safe spaces that are rooted and thrive in heart-centered wholeness where we are seen, heard, and celebrated for who we truly are.”

For those unfamiliar with self-care as a form of emotional and spiritual practice, Lowe offers a different perspective.

“I hope you let go of the belief that self-care is indulgent and selfish, and realize that tending to yourself is the deepest form of luxury,” she said. “Sacred self-care isn’t just bubble baths and face masks. It’s boundaries that protect your peace. It’s dance parties in your living room. It’s about nourishing your soul.”

As she looks ahead, her mission remains focused on providing meaningful experiences.

“Time is the only resource we can’t get back,” Lowe said. “So why not spend it on what makes you feel alive, held, and loved, even if that’s something you’ve never experienced before? I believe you are worthy of that. You always have been. And you are always welcome here.”
