OPINION
Editor;
San Angelo residents were recently notified of a multi-agency law enforcement training exercise involving simulated gunfire and an increased police presence in a residential area, announced with very short notice.
In isolation, training is not the issue. Context is.
We are living in a moment of heightened national tension around law enforcement, federal immigration actions, and civil rights. Many people are already uneasy. In that environment, sudden announcements of realistic police exercises without clear public explanation do not build confidence. They amplify fear and mistrust.
San Angelo is a small community. Trust between residents and law enforcement matters here more than press releases. When exercises like this are announced abruptly, people deserve to know why now, why here, and how community impact is being considered.
Some of us are veterans. We served under rules that emphasized restraint, accountability, and respect for due process. We were taught that public trust is not a public relations problem. It is a foundation of lawful authority.
This is not an accusation against local officers. It is a call for transparency and awareness. If public safety agencies want community trust, they must act with the same care toward the public that they expect from the public toward them.
San Angelo has a long history of resilience and civic responsibility. This is an opportunity to draw a clear line in favor of constitutional principles, clear communication, and accountability, especially during tense times.
