PETS
With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, it’s important to keep our furry friends in mind as we celebrate. Here are some common hazards and safety tips for the holiday.
Strings and Ribbons
- Love is in the air, but it doesn’t always stay there. Balloons can cause intestinal blockage in pets if ingested.

Sweets
- Sweet treats aren’t for everyone. Chocolate can cause GI, neurologic and heart problems, and candy containing Xylitol can cause low blood sugar and liver problems.
Alcohol
- Wine and dine, not wine and canine. Ingestion can lead to alcohol poisoning in animals.
Flowers
- Stop and smell the roses, not the veterinary bill. Flowers from the Lilium species can cause gastrointestinal upset if eaten.
Fire
- The fireplace is romantic, but it can also be dangerous. Always make sure you are taking proper precautions to protect your pet from fire or smoke inhalation.
Call for Help
- Call Poison Control and make a plan to seek care if you believe your pet has ingested these Valentine’s Day goodies. The number is 1-888-426-4435.
