By any measure, West Texas has earned its place as hallowed ground in the history of the American cattle industry. From the Spanish vaqueros of the 18th century to the thundering herds of the Chisholm Trail, this rugged land helped birth the nation’s beef industry. But today, the same soil that once fed a booming export economy lies scorched—not by drought, but by the Trump Administration’s reckless trade war. The United States’ beef trade to China has come to an abrupt halt because of Trump’s tariffs.
According to U.S. Department of Agriculture data, the value of U.S. beef exports to China have generally fluctuated but have been strong. For instance, in 2024, exports were valued at approximately $1.5 billion. By comparison, exports in 2022 reached $2.1 billion. China has been an important customer for American beef – until now!
Out here in West Texas, we’ve weathered droughts, floods, and market crashes with our heads held high. But nothing prepared us for the betrayal that came from the very man we trusted. This was a sucker punch! He promised prosperity and instead we are withering under the weight of broken pledges and tariff-fueled ruin. He spouted sweet talk about saving American agriculture—about standing up for the forgotten men and women who feed this country. We branded his name onto our ballots thinking we were branding hope. We believed him. God help us, we voted for Trump. Instead, we got abandonment.
Trump’s Tariffs
Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs kicked off a retaliatory war around the world. China slapped a mind-numbing retaliatory 125% tariff on U.S. beef on top of the existing 22%. American cattle processors — already struggling with production bottlenecks—were immediately priced out of the market.
To be clear, a tariff is a tax on a product imported from another country. The tariff is paid by the company that imports the product, such as electronics, medicines, clothing, food, etc. Characteristically, tariffs have caused prices to increase because higher product costs are passed on to the consumers.
Australia Takes US Markets
Australia, sensing an opening, stepped in with huge beef exports to China?. An Australian beef industry spokesman, in an Australian news article, stated that, “If there is a tit-for-tat around the globe and countries like Japan or China push up reciprocal tariffs, it may prevent American beef from becoming commercially viable in those regions and Australian beef will fill the gap.” Australian beef exports to China are up nearly 40 percent for the same period as last year. Australia is now the lone supplier of high-quality white marbled beef into China!
The Trump Administration might call it tough negotiation. In West Texas, we call it economic arson. And Australian beef producers are laughing all the way to the bank – thankful for this Administration’s trade stupidities.
Tariffs Hit Home
This situation is not some abstract trade dispute affecting Wall Street or Washington insiders. This is personal. There are generational ranchers in Sonora, Lubbock, San Angelo, Midland, and Abilene watching their livelihoods collapse under the weight of tariffs they never asked for and diplomacy they never endorsed. These ranches survived the brutal winter of 1886-87, but they won’t be able to survive this Administration’s tariff war if it continues.
Worse still, these tariffs could bring about empty feedlots, idle processing plants, and West Texas towns hemorrhaging jobs. The Administration didn’t just fumble a trade deal – it gutted a legacy. They strangled a historic industry with tariffs and testosterone-fueled nationalism masquerading as strategy. They made it possible for Australian beef to replace our beef on China’s dinner plates.
History won’t remember this as a trade war. It will be remembered it as a betrayal! We won’t forget the bitterweed forced down our throats and the broken promises. And we’re mad as hell! The fight for truth—and for fair treatment—starts now. What are you going to do?
