Disc golfers will be able to enjoy another 9-hole course in San Angelo with the approval of a plan by Sean Fuentes and the San Angelo Disc Golf Club.

The City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved a Memorandum of Understanding with Fuentes green lighting the construction of a disc golf course at Jaime Padron Memorial Park.

Fuentes, a longtime disc-golf advocate, submitted the proposal in partnership with the SADGC, a community-based organization made up of residents from across the Concho Valley. The group hopes to promote the growth of disc golf in the region, while engaging in community outreach and charitable efforts.

Each hole will include a concrete tee pad, measuring 6-feet by 10-feet, and equipment will consist of Innova Discatcher Pro 28 baskets.

Located at 2730 Ben Ficklin Rd, Jaime Padron Memorial Park was identified by the club as an ideal location for the course.

The park, which spans more than five acres, is adjacent to the Southside Recreation Center — a hub for youth activity on the city’s south side — and is situated within a densely-populated residential area.

Proponents of the plan cited the park’s visibility, open layout, and accessibility for pedestrians as reasons it would be a suitable and safe location for the disc golf course.

Each hole will include a concrete tee pad, measuring 6-feet by 10-feet, and equipment will consist of Innova Discatcher Pro 28 baskets.

According to the proposal, the course will feature nine tees and 10 baskets.

Additional course infrastructure will include individual tee signs displaying each hole’s number, par, distance, and sponsorship information. A central course sign will also be installed, featuring a full map of the course layout, club rules, a community bulletin board, and a suggestion box to gather player feedback.

All expenses related to the project — including equipment, installation, and ongoing maintenance — will be privately funded by Fuentes and the San Angelo Disc Golf Club, who have committed to supporting the upkeep of the course to ensure it remains a safe and accessible amenity for the public.

Before the Council’s vote, the proposal had been reviewed and recommended for approval by the city’s Parks and Recreation Advisory Board.

The Council’s unanimous vote authorizes the City Manager to move forward with negotiating and executing all necessary agreements related to the course’s development.

An estimated timeline for the start or completion of the course construction has not yet been announced.

Officer Jaime Padron

San Angelo’s Padron Park is named in honor of Officer Jaime Padron, who was fatally shot in the line of duty while responding to a call in Austin, Texas, on April 6, 2012.

Padron was a husband and father of two.

After graduating from Christoval High School in 1989, Padron joined the US Marines and served with distinction in Desert Storm.

His law enforcement career began as a prison guard at the Eden Detention Center, and after graduating from the San Angelo Police Academy in 1995, he served for 13 years here, eventually graduating with honors from Angelo State University in 2004, a feat he achieved while working full time and raising a family.

After moving on to Austin, he served with the Airport Police before moving over to the Austin Police Department.

The San Angelo City Council voted to rename Rio Vista Park in Padron’s honor on June 18, 2013.
