REPORTER’S NOTEBOOK

During a brief battery-change break while covering the “No Kings 2” protest on Saturday, I wandered over to the periphery of the park, where a sizeable butterfly caught my attention on its way to some lantanas above the lily ponds in Civic League Park.

The brief shower just before the event began lent a fresh smell to the air, and I began surveying some of the last blooms of the season.

I decided to make my way back to Pat Murphy Bridge on Beauregard via the Rose Garden, following a couple of the butterflies I had seen.

I meant to come by and photograph these beauties several weeks ago but kept getting sidetracked. I was moved by the striking colors in the park just ahead of fall really setting in.

To see the world in a grain of sand
and a heaven in a wild flower,
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And eternity in an hour.

P.S. Down in the International Waterlily Collection, there was at least one bee on every single bloom.
