City Council approved a series of infrastructure, public safety, and housing measures during its regular meeting Tuesday, including authorizing a federal grant application for new firefighter breathing equipment, supporting infrastructure improvements tied to future residential growth, and advancing the city’s 2026 federal housing plan.

In San Angelo: Animal Services received some needed relief this week: city council discussed and passed along two measures on Tuesday that will help the shelter.
First, a donation of flea and tick prevention medication valued at $90,000 dollars; and an increase to the Animal Services budget to meet higher-than-expected operational needs, approving an extra $60,883 for animal medical expenses.
A proposed 11-mile highway project would redirect freight traffic around San Angelo and connect to the future Interstate 27 corridor.
The proposed San Angelo North Relief Route would connect U.S. highways 87 and 67 north of the city. A relief route is designed to move through traffic, particularly freight traffic, around a community rather than through local streets and highways.

While most coverage of the San Angelo City Council meeting on May 19 was focused on the regulations for potential data center development, council also moved to amend the city’s zoning regulations to encourage more affordable housing, with a major gap in availability in sight.
Planning and Development Services Director Aaron Vannoy said the proposals were shaped by housing studies completed in 2019 and 2024 examining San Angelo’s housing supply, pricing trends and future needs.

The Continental Football League awarded its final Southern Division franchise to the San Angelo Sidewinders, completing an all-Texas lineup for the league’s inaugural 2026 season. The Sidewinders join the Texas Syndicate of Austin, the San Antonio Toros and the Tall City Black Gold of Midland in a regional division built around short travel distances and local rivalries. The league announced the addition last week from its headquarters in Wheeling, West Virginia.
