Western Art returns to Fort Concho with the opening of the American Plains Artists Summer Show, which opens at 5:30 p.m. today in the Barracks 6 Exhibit Hall, corner of Henry O. Flipper and Burgess streets.

The event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be available.

Four Texas Artists Featured

Fifty western paintings will be on display by artists from four states, who were chosen by guests at last year’s event.

Texas artists featured in this year’s show include Lou Sanders Albright of Athens, Mary Lambeth and Cheryl Roush, both of Midland, and James Loveless of Fort Worth.

Also featured will be Sherry Blanchard Stewart of Scottsdale, Arizona; Eileen Nistler of Upton, Wyoming and Theresa Otteson of Farmington, Utah.

These painters will be capturing the spirit of the American West with portrayals of still life, farming and ranching, cowboys and Native Americans, Great Plains vistas and more.

All About the APA

Fort Concho has been the site for the American Plains Artists Summer Show for the past 10 years.

The APA was founded in 1982 by a small group of artists who banded together to highlight, through their art, “the variety to be found in the vast region known as the American Plains.”

Regular hours for the show will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and 1:30-4:30 p.m. Sundays.

National Cowboy Day

On Saturday, July 26, Fort Concho will host a National Cowboy Day celebration with a continental breakfast, a gallery talk by Laura Huckaby of the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, and a program by the Concho Cowboy Company.

That program starts at 9 a.m. and is free to all. Call 325-481-2646 or check the website at fortconcho.com for more information.

The APA show will be open through July, and the paintings are for sale, with proceeds benefiting both the artists and Fort Concho.
