At the most recent SAISD School Board meeting, Trustee Karla Cardenas discussed the large number of school transfers as a reason the population of students were so low in other schools.

Superintendent Dr. Christopher Moran also verified that to right size elementary schools the current permissive transfer policy is something the Board would have to look at.

So we asked for the transfer data for the 2025-2026 school year for the District. What we discovered is that over 12% of students in the District are transfers.

Current student enrollment of SAISD is around 13,004. A total of 1,605 students in SAISD do not attend the school in the attendance boundary where they live.

65 students are transfers into SAISD from another school district. The largest majority of transfers into SAISD are from Grape Creek at 166.

Contrary to popular belief, transfers out of SAISD to rural schools does not appear to be a problem. No SAISD students transferred to any neighboring districts in the 2025-2026 school year.

The school with the largest number of transfers in was Fort Concho Elementary with 401.

That is larger than the size of some elementary schools in the district.

Second highest number of transfers in was to Central High School at 227. John Glenn Middle School was a close third at 216. Santa Rita elementary was not far behind at 201.

Those four schools alone account for 65% of all transfer in the District

The following schools each had a net loss of students transferring out to those transferring in:

  • Belaire – net loss 46
  • Bonham – net loss 65
  • Bowie – net loss 118
  • Bradford – net loss 5
  • Crockett – net loss 18
  • Fannin – net loss 85
  • Holiman – net loss 9
  • Lakeview – net loss 87
  • Lamar – net loss 114
  • Lincoln – net loss 49
  • Lone Star – net loss 19
  • Reagan – net loss 31

Re school transfers, of course Ft. Concho has the most since it’s the magnet school of GT school or whatever they call it.
Santa Rita is too, to some extent, right?

In the article it states the largest out of district transfers is Wall at 47, but your chart shows Grape Creek at 166.
