When I started this news site I was not sure how it would be received. Based on anecdotal evidence I believed there was a hunger for a better source of local news. I did not know how right I was.
I chose the name “Democrat” because it reminded me of old newspapers, some of which still carry that name like The Weatherford Democrat and The Arkansas Democrat. I also wanted it to be a place that promoted democracy (with a small “d”)
As we began publication, and it took off, and we started discussing it more internally I realized that the name did not accurately reflect what the publication is—a community publication. My desire is to present the best, most accurate source of local news in the Concho Valley. It is not intended to be a partisan or political publication. We do not cover any state or national issues or politics unless it has a direct impact on our local community. Taking all that into consideration it was apparent the name had to change.
We chose The Concho Observer because this publication is about accountability. It is about providing watchful, analytical stories about local politics, government and events in a measured way. Democracy requires truth and this is what we aim to deliver at The Concho Observer.
