Local musicians are probably a little ‘played out’ this weekend after RiverFest, where over a dozen local bands entertained from the Chadbourne Bridge and the Riverstage. This weekend is a little more low-key, but there’s still plenty to see:
War Child at Garden Lounge: Local ‘cosmic blues’ rockers War Child will perform at the Garden Lounge, their show was originally booked for August but was cancelled due to the heat. Now with the cooler temps moving in, you can rock out all night. War Child was featured in SAPAC’s Musical Crossroads show, performing in the Brooks and Bates Theatre. They can get pretty loud, but never for its own sake. Their lead guitarist Zachary Peterson is a great soloist; along with Cooper Jones on drums, Scott Russell on bass, Casey Dees on keyboards, their style is ideal for anyone who still thinks Hendrix is the king.
Mike McClure at Fifi’s: McClure is genre-bender, blues, folk, and roots. From Stillwater, OK., he’s released ten studio albums. The latest, Looking Up, was released in 2020, and was described by Folk Music UK, who described the album’s closing track thusly: “The Red Dirt alt-country Sword And Saddle, the title underscoring its early Guy Clark-like anthemic assured guitar chords, a strong and infectious end to an album that both marks the end of McClure’s past and the bright direction of his future.”

ASU Wind Ensemble at City Hall: The Angelo State University Wind Ensemble will present its first concert of the fall season on Sunday, Oct. 5, in the Murphey Performance Hall at 72 W. College Ave. in downtown San Angelo.
Titled “Steampunk Dreams,” the concert will begin at 2:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public. The musical program will include:
- “First Suite in E-flat” by Gustav Holst
- “Suite Dreams” by Steven Bryant
- “Steampunk Suite” by Erika Svanoe
- “Apocalyptic Dreams” by David Gillingham
The ASU Wind Ensemble features 50 student musicians performing on various woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. It is directed by Dr. Jonathan Alvis, ASU director of bands.
