EYE ON SAN ANGELO

O.G.s picked a shady table in Martin Luther King Jr. Park for Juneteenth Friday.

Locals out celebrating the end of slavery in Texas were treated to very pleasant weather over the extended holiday.

Festivities, organized by the Blackshear Heights Family, opened Thursday afternoon with a community gathering at Martin Luther King Jr. Park.

Food trucks and a few grills provided some tasty food for everyone, and many were seen enjoying a cold beverage as a fairly-hot afternoon began to cool off.

Over the course of the weekend, there were several gatherings, a parade, speakers and a community meal.

The community also came together for the funeral services of Rev. “Hank” Hankins, beloved pastor at Wesley United Methodist, and First United Methodist in San Angelo, and St. Peter’s by the Sea UMC in Corpus Christi, who passed on June 11 at the age of 90.

Originally from Florida, Rev. Hankins first came to San Angelo during his distinguished Air Force career, and he and his wife, Mary, chose to return after his retirement from the military.

Taking a position with Ethicon, Inc., Hankins quickly became very involved in the community and truly made San Angelo his second hometown.

May his Memory be Eternal!
