Tariffs Torch American Farmers and Consumers!

Retaliatory tariffs from China and other nations are slamming U.S. agricultural exports, particularly staples like soybeans, corn, and red meat. These are not just statistics—they represent real families struggling to keep their farms afloat. “This means nothing but pain,” warns Aaron Lehman of the Iowa Farmers Union. Zippy Duval, leader of the American Farm Bureau, is quoted in media reports as stating that the Trump tariffs “will take a toll on rural America.”

Domestic Markets Aren’t Enough

Domestic markets cannot absorb the surplus, meaning lower prices for farmers already squeezed by rising input costs. The head of the National Corn Growers Association stated that the Trump tariffs would bring, “a troubling economic landscape.” Echoing a similar sentiment, the leader of the American Soybean Association said, “Tariffs are not something to take lightly and ‘have fun’ with.”
The ripple effects extend beyond the farm. Trump’s tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports will push up fertilizer costs, further cutting into farmers’ already thin margins. Meanwhile, competitors like Brazil and Argentina are ready to step in, solidifying their market share at America’s expense. Once these trading relationships shift, they may not return.

Producers of agricultural commodities understand the need for fair trade, but Trump’s tariffs are not the answer. They are a tax on American agriculture, shifting the burden onto those who can least afford it. If the Trump Administration truly cares about rural America, it must end this destructive trade war before more farms go under.
The livestock industry, too, is bracing for impact. The U.S. exports about 10% of its pork to Mexico—losing that market will hurt ranchers and drive-up costs for consumers. Even staple goods like avocados and fresh produce could see price hikes, as tariffs force suppliers to pass costs along to American households.

The Last Trump Trade War

The last trade war with China in 2018 cost U.S. agriculture $27 billion. This time, the sector is even weaker—commodity prices are down nearly 50% from their peaks, and farm debt is climbing. The Trump Administration must reconsider its anti-farmer and consumer approach. Protecting national industries is a worthy goal, but Trump’s tariffs are a blunt instrument with unintended consequences.

Alpha Paving Ad

Adding insult to injury, the Trump Administration has shut down USAID. It is a huge blow to American farmers. In 2024, USAID purchased billions of dollars in agricultural commodities from American farmers, including wheat, sorghum, peas, rice, lentils, and beans. These purchases were made for humanitarian aid programs like Food for Peace and Food for Progress.

US AID Helps American Farmers and Ranchers

USAID, in the past, has spent approximately $2 billion annually on U.S. agricultural commodities for humanitarian aid programs like Food for Peace and Food for Progress. These purchases focus on staple crops such as wheat, sorghum, lentils, peas, rice, and vegetable oil, which are shipped to food-insecure regions like Somalia, Ukraine, and Venezuela. In 2024 alone, USAID bought:

  • 200,000 metric tons of wheat (valued at $65 million).
  • $70 million in sorghum, wheat, and peas from Minnesota-based vendors like Cargill and CHS Inc.
  • $950 million in a single agreement with USDA to buy wheat, rice, sorghum, lentils, and beans for emergency aid.

Instead of sacrificing American farmers and consumers, while escalating global economic conflict, the Trump Administration should prioritize diplomacy and negotiate solutions that secure fair trade without sacrificing America’s hard-working farmers and ranchers. When agricultural producers struggle, the entire nation feels the impact and becomes economically anemic.

It’s time for the Trump Administration to stop playing politics with people’s livelihoods. American farmers deserve better. It’s time for some truth-telling! Call your elected officials and tell them to stop playing Russian roulette with American farmers and consumers!

Constance Truthe absolutely nails it. This is the kind of no-nonsense, informed perspective we need more of. She cuts through the political spin and lays out the real damage these reckless tariffs are doing to hardworking farmers and everyday consumers. While others push empty slogans, she’s calling out the devastating consequences in plain terms. It’s refreshing—and long overdue. I hope to hear more from her on this and other critical issues that actually matter to Americans. Keep speaking truth to power, Constance!

Absolutely spot on, Hannah. Constance Truthe is delivering the hard facts that the Trump Administration refuses to acknowledge. While Trump dismisses the economic pain his tariffs are causing as just “a little bit of disturbance,” real Americans—farmers, consumers, and retirees—are taking the hit.

The stock market is rattled. Uncertainty around tariffs is dragging down 401(k)s and retirement accounts, forcing people to withdraw their savings just to stay afloat. And now, in a sign of pure desperation, Trump is scrambling for control—suddenly saying DOGE must get approval for budget cuts from department heads. But it’s too little, too late. The damage is done, and working Americans are the ones paying the price.

Meanwhile, Musk is running amok, unchecked and emboldened, making reckless economic decisions that only add fuel to the fire. American agriculture is being sacrificed while competitors like Brazil and Argentina step in to take our place in global markets—potentially for good.

This is the cost of Trump’s failed trade war. Farmers are losing markets, families are losing financial security, and consumers are staring down higher prices on everything from pork to produce. We need accountability. We need leadership. And we need policies that protect hardworking Americans—not ones that gamble away our livelihoods.

Keep calling it out, Constance. The truth matters now more than ever.
