Talks on Frontier Life and Legends at Fort Speaker Series

Fort Concho will host their Fall Speaker Series beginning Sept. 3, with weekly lectures from local historians, artists, and naturalists. 

Lectures begin at noon and run for about an hour in the Fort Commissary, 702 Burgess St. at Avenue C. The event is free and open to the public, and everyone is invited to bring their lunch and learn about local history.  

On Sept. 3, local author and historian Preston Lewis will present “Betting on Horses: Racing as an Economic Development Tool in 1866-1896 San Angelo.” 

Sept. 10, Tom Ashmore and C.A. Maegden will present “The Jumano Picture Story of the Lady in Blue at Meyers Spring, Texas.”

Sept. 17, Rene Trevino, language and cultural preservation director for the Texas Kickapoo Indian Tribe will present “Upcoming 161st Anniversary of the Battle of Dove Creek”, along with master naturalist Joyce Gray. 

Sept. 24, the series will conclude with Jim Matthews’ talk, “Using the Deity’s Name In Reverence on the Texas Frontier: Post Chaplains and Fort Concho.”
