If you’ve ever wanted to explore the night sky, late July and August are a perfect time to start.
Iconic meteor showers like the Alpha Capricornids are now visible, and will begin to peak toward the end of this week, through August 13, when larger showers like the Perseid will peak.
Sharpen your skills with State Park Ranger Kennie and local astronomers Saturday as they explore the night skies of San Angelo, with special focus on the summer constellations.
Viewing begins 9:30 p.m. at the Red Arroyo Campground Boat Ramp. Visitors are advised to bring water, chairs, ground cover, and a red-light flashlight or headlamp.
TIPS FOR AMATEUR ASTRONOMERS
Binoculars and Spotting Scopes can be used in lieu of dedicated telescopes.
Light pollution can be avoided by traveling 20 or more miles from the city. As your eyes adjust, larger galaxies like the Milky Way will start to appear.
Meteor showers peak in the earliest hours of the morning, just after midnight through 5 a.m., so go to bed early and set your alarm so you don’t miss out.
WOMEN’S HIKE
A Women’s Hike is set for Sunday at 8:45 a.m.
The 1.6-mile hike will begin at the playground parking lot and tour into Talley Valley via Chaparral and Horny Toad trails.
According to the rangers, the hike’s terrain is moderate, but they suggest bringing along trekking poles to help stabilize yourself while hiking, taking stress off your knees and back.
Also, make sure to bring plenty of water, sun protection, and appropriate clothing.
The park is still under an alert for sticker burrs and goat-heads.
If you want to blaze your own path, keep in mind that some trails may still have debris from recent flooding.
Changing weather can also disrupt natural snake and stinging-insect habitats; visitors should pay special attention.
CAMPGROUND AND TRAIL CLOSURES
The south side of the park including Red Arroyo, Isabel Harte, and Lakeview Day Use Area are open.
Bald Eagle and North Concho Campgrounds are closed, as well as Bell’s Trailhead. Shady, North Scenic Loop, and Lower Ghost Camp trails are still closed.
Cabins are closed for rentals through August 10.
OC Fisher is up at 18.6 percent. Enter the water at your own risk, as underwater debris from flooding may be present.
