The factors used to determine school closures will be discussed Monday night, March 9, 2026 at the San Angelo Independent School District’s Board of Trustee meeting.

The factors or criteria used to determine which elementary schools will be closed as part of the District’s “right sizing” strategy has been controversial. Board Trustee Karla Cardenas has requested more information on the specific factors used to rate elementary schools for possible closure.

She pushed to place this on the agenda again and open it up for more discussion. We reach out to Ms. Cardenas and she provided this comment as to why she wanted this topic discussed again.

“We as board members have a duty and commitment to server our entire community to the absolute best of our abilities. Our duty includes acknowledging and holding accountable the decisions made by our Superintendent.

Through our own research, experience, community input, and professional recommendations, together we can make our school district a success across San Angelo, to even include low socio-economic and disadvantage communities.

Instead of finding reasons to continue to take away from, we need to look at and include all data and present that to all, in an effort to find reasons to pour back in to these neighborhoods. When you put good in you get good out.”
