A San Angelo family is in the running for Baby of the Year, and with only six days until the contest ends, they are hoping for a little help from friends in the area.

According to the mother, Amber Garavay, her son Tyrelle — or TJ as they call him — was born prematurely at 25 weeks, and has shown a real fighting spirit ever since.

In a brief telephone interview on Friday, Garivay said she and her husband had to move to Houston to be close to the specialists in charge of TJ’s care, which has been trying for them, as most of their family lives elsewhere.

“We’re hanging in there,” she said, “Our son just turned 11 months, and we’ll be having his first birthday next month.”

She said the year has flown by, and things are a little more settled now, but with her being a full-time mom, keeping everything going on one income is a challenge, but the fact that the baby is doing well keeps them on track.

“We’re still seeing some specialists, but not as many, we’re slowly [being released by] them… I get to town occasionally to visit family, but we really miss them.”

Garivay said the contest, sponsored by Baby2Baby and “Variety” Magazine, offers a cash prize of $25,000, which would be a Godsend for their family.
