OBITUARY

Ola Mae McCorkle, a beloved and devoted individual, passed away on December 23, 2025, at the age of 81. Ola was a resident of San Angelo, and was known for her honest, hard-working, and selfless nature.

Born on January 26, 1944, in Ballinger, Texas, to W.M. Young and Myrtle Lee Allen, Ola graduated from George Washington Carver in Ballinger.

In 1963, Ola received an appointment from Congressman Ovie Clark Fisher (TX 21) to work as an elevator operator in our nation’s Capitol in Washington, D.C. She later returned to San Angelo to be with her family and worked as the secretary to Principal Thomas at Blackshear Elementary. She also worked briefly as a file clerk at GTE. In 1974, Ola was hired as a secretary in the Kinesiology department at Angelo State University, where she served faithfully until her retirement in 1999 after 25 years of service.

In 1966, Ola married James L. Horne, Jr., and together they had a daughter, Stephanie Horne (Brooks). In 1988, she married George McCorkle on New Year’s Eve. Ola is survived by her daughter, son-in-law, three brothers, and a host of family and great friends.

Ola’s faith and her relationship with God and her church were very important to her. She had a passion for sports, particularly softball, football, and basketball.

She was also deeply involved in her community, being one of the founders of the Daily Bread Soup Kitchen at Wesley Trinity Methodist Church where she also played the piano for many years. As a volunteer coordinator, she worked tirelessly with over 270 volunteers, providing 39,641.24 hours of service, and was honored by the Concho Valley Council of Governments for her contributions.

Ola always encouraged people to find the Lord and grow their own relationship with Him, offering her friendship and faith to everyone she could. She was supportive, kind, and helpful, leaving a legacy of resilience and faithfulness.

The family is thankful for the example that Ola set forth in being such a wonderful person.

A visitation will be held on January 2, 2026, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Johnson’s Funeral Home, located at 435 West Beauregard, San Angelo, TX 76903. The funeral service will follow at the same location. The committal service will take place from 12 to 1 p.m. at Johnson’s Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens, located at 4989 FM Highway 1223, San Angelo, TX 76905.
